To forgive ourselves when the heart behaves in such a way that makes us regret it later. OP's is a reminder that the heart - or our emotions - don't always make sense or have cause, and we should remember that. What exactly did the "clever" parts add? Is it saying that our emotions' attributes are pent up because of their attributes? Is it saying that the etymology of "present" is due to it's value? I don't see any literal or metaphorical meaning for those parts that make any sense. "Now is a gift" -> The present is something worthwhile that we have. ![]() "Hearts are wild creatures" -> Emotions have the attributes of wild animals (unpredictable, irrational, governed by instinct). The "clever" part adds nothing of any meaning. My point is that the meaning is all contained in the first half of what was said. "You must be the change you want to see in the world." "An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind." "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win."
